Originally we were the crew of the USS Yorktown, partially inspired by Gene Roddenberry's original name for the Enterprise, partially because both my husband and I are avid students of American history, and lastly because he won the coin toss. My first choice was the USS Resolute, but I'm a gracious loser.
After the destruction of the original space station by a rogue faction of the Typhon Pact, Miles O'Brien and Nog led the Starfleet Corps of Engineers in designing and constructing a larger, more advanced starbase in the Bajoran system. Of this Frontier Class, the second one is Yorktown Station. I was offered command, the USS Yorktown was gussied up a bit, renamed the USS Saratoga, and my capable then executive officer, Thomas Donohoe, took command. They roam about, stopping by for recreation, repairs, upgrades, and a hug or three.
Burning Questions I've been asked:
After nearly three years of this, let me address it for the barking ones, or the naturally curious.
Questions (Some are downright nosy)
1. Why do you have a station?
2. Why does your husband have a different group?
3. Are you getting divorced?
4. Is it fair that you each have a SFI chapter?
5. You have two sons with the same first name, that causes confusion. Why is this?
Answers
1. We wanted one. The station is awesome (see the specs), and I have my own mall.
2. Some crew wanted a change, we discussed, decided to split yet stay together.
3. I'll be a widow before a divorce.
4. We planned and worked for it, got it approved, and been a success so far. Try it. You can do it, too!
5. Once upon a time, a geeky glamour girl wannabe from Tennessee met a geeky New Yorker PhD student, eventually married. They each had two children. Hers were Matthew and Morgan, his were Margaret and Matthew. Add in different surnames...well, chaos and shenanigans ensued but we persevered and 22 years in we're doing well. Confusion for us? No. For others? Not our problem.
